General childcare books

Birth and Beyond: pregnancy, birth, your baby and family; the Definitive Guide by Dr Yehudi Gordon

This book was like my bible throughout, it is beautifully written, combining scientific and research with intuition. It continues to give me support and reassurance whenever I  need. There is a concise Health A-Z too, with a variety of diagnosic and alternative treatment options for every type of ailment.

Raising Boys: Why Boys are Different - And How to Help Them Become Happy and Well-balanced Men Steve Biddulph

A little book that's interesting to dip into offering ideas about the importance of nurturing boys and getting male role models involvedin order to help boys to develop into fully rounded respectful adults

Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason - Alfie Kohn

This was by far the best parenting book I've ever read. Rather than focusing on how we can get our children to do what we want them to, this books focuses on the long term effects on how our well meant discipline techniques may affect out children and the person they become. Alfie Kohn uses lots of evidence from many studies to explain how rewards, punishments and praise can actually be damging to out children, and questions why we beleive many common conceptions about raising children.

Books about babies who cry lots

The Fussy Baby Book: Parenting Your High-need Child from Birth to Five by William Sears and Martha Sears

I found this helped me to be more confident in responding to my baby's crying and to find ways to manage better and to stop panicking. It gave me a better sense of perspective and a long term view. My baby wanted to sleep on me for months and this book helped me to realise that if i met his needs it would help his temperament and our relationship would improve. It made me realise that it would be better for me and my baby if I changed my day time routine to rest more, do less housework etc  rather than try to force the baby to fit in with my busy schedule

The Baby Sleep Book: How to Help Your Baby to Sleep and Have a Restful Night by William Sears and Martha Sears

I loved this book as it made me realise that the quick solutions aren't always the best in the long term and it confirmed my gut instinct that my baby needed night time parenting too and that dad should get more involved to give me a break . I particularly liked the section on mother burn out and ideas for treating oneself kindly.

Books on the emotional journey of becoming a mum/parent

What Mothers Do: Especially When it Looks Like Nothing (Paperback)

by Naomi Stadlen

I found this great as it quotes difficult and unexpected emotions mothers feel and helped me to understand some of the emotions I was trying to deal with and am still trying to understand

Books on weaning and introducing solids

Baby-led Weaning: Helping Your Baby to Love Good Food by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett

this was great for advising how to do baby led weaning giving information about salty foods, the benefits of baby led weaning and helped to allay my fears about choking. Great practical information about how a baby progresses from a liquid diet to solids , I was just so pleased that i didn't have to spend my time pureeing and spooning feeding my baby he's learnt to feed himself in his own time at his own pace.
